Winchester Walking Football Club celebrated an excellent tournament victory on Saturday 11 July 2026, triumphing in the Over-65s section of an invitational competition organised by our friends and close neighbours, Eastleigh Walking Football Club.
The Winchester squad comprised Andy Bramley, Simon Davitt, Chris Haynes, David Kirkby, Steve Nash, Graham Newland, Barry Poffley and Les Spevock.
WWFC competed against teams from Eastleigh, Guernsey and Portsmouth. The tournament began with a round-robin stage, with each team playing the other three. The top two sides then met in a final to decide the overall winners, while the third- and fourth-placed teams played for the remaining positions.
Some inspired management (take note Mr Tuchel) saw Winchester rest leading scorer Barry Poffley for the last qualifying game as a place in the final was already assured. This paid off when Barry subsequently netted the tournament winning goal.
Winchester opened with an impressive 3–1 victory over Portsmouth, with Barry Poffley scoring a superb hat-trick.
That was followed by a hard-fought 2–1 win against Guernsey, with Graham Newland and Steve Nash on the scoresheet.
A narrow 1–0 defeat against Eastleigh in the final round-robin match meant the two local sides met again in the tournament final.
Winchester turned the tables when it mattered most, securing a 1–0 victory thanks to another goal from the refreshed Barry Poffley and being crowned tournament champions.
Congratulations to the whole squad on an excellent team performance, and our thanks to Eastleigh Walking Football Club for organising and hosting such an enjoyable and competitive tournament.
