England Women’s Walking Football Comes to Winchester

Winchester Walking Football Club is delighted to help promote a very special day for women’s walking football in Winchester.

On Saturday 20th June 2026, the WFA England Women’s Walking Football squads will be training at the home of our hosts, Winchester City FC, from 1.00pm to 5.00pm.

This is a rare and exciting occasion, with the England Women’s 40s, 50s and 60s squads all training at the same venue on the same day. They will be joined by the WFA Women’s Kicking Cancer team and a South East Select team.

The afternoon will begin with photographs of players receiving their caps following a recent trip to Spain, before the squads move into warm-ups, drills and plenty of match play.

There is a strong Winchester connection through Heather Kirkland, who is the WFA England Women’s 60s Manager and has held that role since 2020, having also represented the squad as a player. Heather is also the coach of Winchester Walking Football Club, a role she took up in 2022, and has played a key part in the club’s continued growth.

The England Women’s squads have enjoyed outstanding recent success. The 40s squad are rebuilding following their triumph at the World Nations Cup in Spain in October 2025, where they were crowned World Champions after beating France in the final. The 50s squad also reached their World Nations Cup final, narrowly losing to France on penalties, while the 60s squad became World Champions in their age group after defeating Australia 6–1 in their final.

The visit also comes ahead of a busy year for the national teams. In September, the Women’s 50s, 60s and Kicking Cancer teams will travel to Toronto, Canada, alongside several England men’s walking football squads. In November, the Women’s 40s, 50s and 60s will travel to Torrevieja, Spain, to take part in the first Women’s European Cup Tournament.

For Winchester Walking Football Club, this event is also an opportunity to raise awareness of the women’s game locally. Many people are still unaware that women’s walking football exists, or that there are excellent facilities here in Winchester where the game can be played.

WWFC continues to grow with the valued support of our club sponsor, Winchester Mobility, whose backing helps us promote walking football as an inclusive, accessible and enjoyable sport for the local community.

WWFC would love to welcome more female players to our regular training sessions, held on Tuesday mornings at Winchester City FC. Our ambition is to build a dedicated Winchester Women’s Walking Football team, especially as more women’s tournaments are now developing across the South region.

Whether you are an experienced player, returning to football after many years, or simply curious about trying something new, walking football is a friendly, inclusive and enjoyable way to stay active.

Come along, watch, support, and help us grow the women’s game in Winchester.
