On Thursday 9th January Winchester Walking Football Club (WWFC) held their annual awards dinner, where members and their partners met at Winchester’s Westgate Hotel to eat, drink, be merry and also acknowledge the progress and achievements of certain award-winning players. The evening kicked off with a social half hour during which raffle tickets were sold and an intrepid group got the dancing started, to the sound of “Neil Diamond” on his ‘I-snubbed-Glastonbury’ tour. The musicians, better known as Liam and Tony White, kept us entertained with modern classics and an occasional dip into the 1960s, ensuring we were dancing until the end of the evening.
A delicious and plentiful meal followed, the raffle was drawn, then Club Chairman Brian Mustoe said a few words congratulating the players on their tournament wins over the year and acknowledging the progress being made by individual players and WWFC as a whole. Finally the main event of the evening, the awards ceremony, took place. Winners on the night were:
Player of the Year - Steve Nash Defensive Player of the Year - David Kirkby
Outstanding Contribution - Sue Hume Golden Boot Award - Barry Poffley
The tongue in cheek ‘Always Running’ award went to Eugene Wills for not being able to walk when required!
Grateful thanks go to organisers, Paul Reade, John Kane and friends, and to all who attended and made the evening such a success. The Raffle raised £180 which went to Prostate Cancer UK, the charity chosen by those present.
On the following Tuesday morning, 2 further trophy presentations were made at the Club’s training session to players unable to attend the dinner,
with Steve Lawson winning the Fair Play award and the coveted Coach’s Choice award for Most Improved Player of the Year going to Glenn Cope.
