Winchester Walking Footballers continued their run of competition wins with their first ever victory at the Hampshire FA’s November Winklebury Tournament
Seven teams entered including two each from Cove, Farnham and Winchester. The 6 matches were of 14 minutes duration each. Winchester won five of their games and drew one scoring nine goals and keeping six clean sheets.
Winchester A Squad: Ian Dowson, David Kirkby (Capt), Martin Kukla (GK), Steve Nash, Graham Newland, Barry Poffley, Eugene Wills
Vs Farnham Blues Won 2 - 0.
A tight game with few clear chances. Winchester played some good passing football. Both goals came from slick passing moves down the right and were well taken. Barry (1), Graham (1)
Vs Cove Greens Won 2 - 0.
Great passing football again from Winchester. A sublime curving pass from Wills deep in defence put Poffley through for the first. Neat play in the second half opened up their defence for the second. Barry (2)
Vs Farnham Clarets Won 1 - 0.
The Farnham goalie made some great saves to keep them in the game until a delicate pass from Nash to Wills - Wills right foot shot produced a great diving save but the rebound was followed up by a left into the goal before the goalie landed thus sealing the game. Eugene (1)
Vs Cove Yellows Drew 0 - 0
Going into this match both Cove Yellows and Winchester had three wins each and exactly the same goal difference. Winchester were on top for most of the game but failed to capitalise. A superb fingertip save by Kukla, then canoning off both posts, towards the end ensured the draw.
Vs Winchester Greens Won 3 - 0.
The derby match was well controlled in the first half, with Winchester 3 up at half-time. The second half was a much closer affair and remained goalless with few scoring opportunities. Barry (2), Steve (1)
Cove Yellows also won their 5th game so everything depended on the final match.
Vs Tadley Won 1 - 0
Tadley were very well defensively organised. A cross from the right to Poffley on the edge of the area from Dowson was blocked in the area and Nash converted the resulting penalty. Steve (1)
