Captain's End Of Year Report 2044

Mick

The Captain’s End of Year Report is a new idea to coincide with the presentation evening, which is a celebration of the clubs and individual members achievements.

Of course, WWFC is not all about winning trophies and we are all grateful to our Social Secretary, Paul R, for all his efforts on the social front, including the presentation evening.

We have several new members this year, which has helped to regularly generate enough players for two games at the Tuesday Session.

We have several members who are recovering from injuries and illness and we need to support them and keep them “connected” to the club.  I wish them all a speedy recovery.

We have a new Fixtures Secretary, Geoff, and look forward to more friendly games.

I would like to give a special mention to the Development Sub Committee (DSC), who are a small group of volunteers, initiated and chaired by Ian.  I would like to thank the Main Committee (MC) members for supporting the DSC with its many proposals to help develop the club.  Previous successes include obtaining grants and buying the extra set of goals and the balls and equipment to allow two games on Tuesdays.  John K, our England International, is the driving force for the new sponsorship proposals, which will commence shortly.

2024 has been an outstanding year for trophy wins (they were on show at the presentation evening) and I am indebted to the invaluable help and support from the vice-captain, Barry.

The scale of this success is due to our coach, Heather, who provides a wealth of experience and knowledge.  We are very lucky to have her.

A special mention goes to our GK, Martin, who has made such a difference.  Martin is the best GK at the Hampshire FA tournaments at Stoneham and Winklebury, which, in my view, makes him the best in Hampshire.  If he was minded to, he could become our second international.

The trophies won in 2024 are:

Stoneham over 50s: January, May, September (shared with Pompey), October, November, December.

April Petersfield: Jeff Williams Trophy

August Gosport: over 65’s

November Winklebury: Over 60’s

Don’t ask me what happened in February, March, June and July!

January 2025 Stoneham: Over 50’s La Liga!!!!

The club has been winners at the last 6 Stoneham tournaments and double winners including Winklebury in November!

We won La Liga (the top league) in May – not all the top teams were there but it did include Pompey, Bournemouth, Hawks and Farnham.

We are always invited to tournaments at Havant and Gosport, not just because we are a good team but also, we play the game in the right spirit.

We also need to thank Paul for arranging our first tour, including a game against the Northern Ireland over 60s walking football team.  I am sure it will be a great success and hopefully the start of many more.

Success is good for the club as it builds our reputation.  Success also raises expectations, so we need to keep developing and improving. Given our age profile we also need more “younger” players.

Here’s to more enjoyment and success in 2025.
