The Hampshire Over 70s League started at Stoneham on 11 September. This is a new league, which supplements the well-established Over 50s League at Stoneham and Over 60s League at Winklebury.
Winchester Walking Football has achieved exceptional results in the last couple of years at the Over 50s and Over 60s, winning many trophies.
The Over 70s League is 3 touch, like the Over 50s and Over 60s Leagues, administered by Hampshire FA. One of the key differences is the Over 70s is truly like a league rather than a monthly one off competition (where the winners receive trophies each month). The Over 70s is a competition where the results accumulative from the first month to the last month each year. Another key difference is that the Over 70s is seven aside.
There are 7 clubs in the Over 70s League: Bournemouth, Cove, Eastleigh, Fleet, Havant Hawks, Portsmouth and Winchester (Bournemouth were invited when a couple of Hampshire clubs dropped out at short notice).
Each month, the teams play 3 or 4 games. After the first month, Winchester were leading but had played 4 games. After the second month when all teams (apart from Hawks) had played 7 games, Winchester were still leading.
At the September tournament, Winchester’s results were: 1:0 v Fleet, 0:0 v Hawks, 2:0 v Cove and 2:1 v Eastleigh.
At the October tournament, Winchester’s results were: 0:0 v Portsmouth, 1:1 v Bournemouth and 2:0 v Eastleigh.
In 7 games, Winchester have conceded two goals (both penalties for 4 non-walking offences!)
